Holmium Laser
The Holmium laser is an advanced technology that uses a high-energy light beam to precisely fragment tissue without causing significant thermal damage to surrounding structures. Its versatility allows it to be used both in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and in the removal of urinary stones.
This technology is applied in minimally invasive procedures, offering an effective and safe alternative to traditional surgery.
What is it used for?
The Holmium laser is used in various areas of Urology, particularly in:
Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (HoLEP):
- Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), which completely removes obstructive prostate tissue without incisions.
- Indicated for large prostates, drastically reducing bleeding, hospitalization, and catheterization time.
Treatment of urinary stones (lithiasis) (kidney, ureter, or bladder):
- Used to fragment urinary stones (laser lithotripsy), allowing their removal without the need for open or more complex surgery.
- Applicable in both flexible and semi-rigid ureteroscopy, as well as percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
Other indications:
- Group ablation of small bladder tumors, minimally invasive and virtually bloodless.
Main benefits
- Greater surgical precision → Enables controlled removal of prostate tissue or fragmentation of stones without damaging adjacent structures.
- Reduced bleeding and complication risk → Ideal for patients with high surgical risk or clotting disorders.
- Faster recovery → Outpatient procedures or very short hospital stays.
- High efficacy in large prostates (HoLEP) → Unlike transurethral resection, HoLEP treats prostates of any size with excellent long-term results.
- Avoids incisions in urinary stone treatment → Laser lithotripsy removes stones without open surgery, reducing pain and recovery time.
